21-Year-Old Bicolano Soldier Latest and Youngest Victim of Terrorist Maute Group
The clash between government troops and the extremist ISIS-inspired terrorist Maute Group has recently claimed the lives of 13 more brave soldiers. And among them is promising 21-year-old Bicolano private, Bernie John Lunas.
Private Lunas was killed as a part of the Marine Battalion Landing Team during the most recent clash in Marawi City.
Upon receiving the news, his father didn’t want to believe it.
Juan Lunas, barangay captain of Hindi, Bacacay in Albay, heard about his son’s death through a phone call in the night. Juan and other members of his family didn’t believe the news straight away. Rightfully, they waited for a confirmation.
The news of Bernie’s death struck them hard when an official of the Philippine Marines confirmed that he was one of the 13 soldiers from the Marine Battalion Landing Team who died in the most recent clash.
It was especially painful for Bernie’s father, Juan Lunas, who said that Bernie only had two weeks left to finish school when he was suddenly pulled out to serve in Marawi. Although greatly pained by the lost, Juan says that Bernie was just upholding his sworn duty as a soldier of the republic.
Bernie’s parents have made plans to go to Manila to visit Bernie’s remains, which will be held in FortBonifacio along with his other fallen comrades.
According to his parents, Bernie’s last phone call was about how he and his fellow soldiers only had coffee and rainwater to drink that day. He also said not to worry as he ensured his parents that they had nothing to worry about because he was in a safe location.
Apart from Private Bernie John Lunas, another soldier that lost his life was 1st Lt. Frederick Sabillano, who recently made headlines when he led the team that discovered P79M in cash and checks in a house in Marawi just last week.
